Part I: Adding the Power of Gratitude to Your Life
Want to become a Power House – or are you one already?
Whether you are one now or want to develop yourself to become one, it is never too late to add the power of gratitude to your life.
The power of gratitude affects every aspect of your life – your fitness, your career and your overall happiness. There are books that tout the power of saying “thank you,” celebrity endorsements to its ability to change your life, and life coaches who reinforce this idea, but have you tried it yourself yet? You might be confused about where to start incorporating “thank you” into your daily routine, or maybe you’re still skeptical whether it really works or not. Still, what better time to start incorporating the power of gratitude into your life than the holiday season?
“Did you know that appreciation, gratitude and love are the highest forms of vibration? You can only have one vibration at a time, and if you are noticing what you appreciate and noticing what you are grateful for, you can’t be noticing what you don’t like.” (link: http://www.oprah.com/spirit/The-Power-of-Gratitude)
How to Start Saying “Thank You”
The best place to begin changing your life is always at home. Here are 5 easy things you can do to incorporate the power of gratitude into every aspect of your life.
1. Say “thank you” to family members every time.
Wow! How much more simple can it get? Expressing gratitude for even small tasks – like cleaning the dishes, opening a door, a hug – can make a huge difference in how you and your family feel about each other. That warm feeling will spread through the rest of your life too, promise!
2. List 5 things you are grateful for out loud before bed every night.
This may seem difficult or silly at first, but saying something out loud adds a layer of reinforcement to your efforts. Think of it as sending good vibrations into the universe, which will create a boomerang effect so that those good vibrations can come back into your life.
3. Start a gratitude journal.
Similar to speaking your gratitude out loud, writing down a list of what you are grateful for throughout your day reinforces those good vibrations. Besides, you then have a record of ALL the things you have to be grateful for in your life next to your bedside every day. What a better way to remember why you deserve to be grateful and positive on a daily basis?
4. Start a family gratitude jar.
Why keep all the good juju to yourself? Include your family in the practice, that way they benefit from the positivity and help keep you on the bandwagon. Think of it as a family fitness program in gratitude. Set a “Thank You” or “Gratitude” jar with strips of blank paper next to it and a pen. Throughout the day, all family members can write everything they are grateful for and drop it in the jar. See how full the jar gets by dinner! Then at dinner pass the jar around the table and read what everyone has written. What a fun family bonding experience!
5. Look for the silver lining in every situation.
This is often the most difficult task for anybody. Sometimes we’re stuck waiting for the bus, running late for an appointment, or you burned your dinner – believe it or not you can find something to be grateful for or positive about in all of these situations. If you’re waiting for the bus, maybe you get to meet someone interesting or catch up on emails while you wait. You’re running late for an appointment, but at least it’s less time you’ll have to sit in the waiting room. You burned your dinner? It’s just a chance to explore your culinary skills!
Expanding the Power of Gratitude
Once you start to see how the power of “thank you” makes you a Power House at home why not maximize its momentum? Here are a few ways you can expand it to other areas of your life – specifically your career.
- Take the time to hand-write a sincere thank you note to investors, staff, customers, clients and other important people. Even if you don’t own the business where you work, writing a thank you note to clients and colleagues always attracts amazing response.
- Thank your assistant and staff on a daily basis.
Showing gratitude to your supporting employees may seem plain polite, but how often do you actually do it?
- Thank your boss for any opportunities.
Being a boss in a company is often a thankless job, so why not spread some of the gratitude to the person that hired you in the first place? Not only is it good vibrations – but it will also make your boss notice you! Best way to get on the fast track to a promotion – be memorable.
Enjoy the power of gratitude in your life with perfect timing for the holidays! Use this time to jump start your potential as a Power House.
